What is the importance of proper hygiene?
As children, we do not really see the importance of proper hygiene because we are too busy playing around. We do not mind getting ourselves dirty, but as we age, we begin to see the importance of having good personal hygiene. Having improper hygiene is not only disadvantageous to oneself, but it may also negatively affect the those around you. Good personal hygiene should be part of our daily routine because it keeps us away from the many possible germs that can come in contact with our skin.

Benefits of having good personal hygiene:
  1. Health Benefits - it helps keep you away from illnesses that may harm you or those around you.
  2. Social Benefits - when interacting with others, it is always best that one keeps himself/herself clean to avoid being the talk of the town and to avoid the risks of getting bullied.
  3. Psychological Benefits - it helps you to become more confident about yourself especially when interacting with others.
What is the proper hygiene composed of?
  1. Shower regularly - we do not often see it, but there is so much pollution around us. That is why we must take showers regularly especially when we are coming from outside because there is a high possibility that some bacteria or diseases may have already come in contact with our skin. Also, it is important that we dry ourselves thoroughly because bacteria easily sticks with us when we are damp.

  2. Wear clean clothes - taking a shower is not enough. It also comes hand in hand with wearing clean clothes. Dirty clothes should be placed in the laundry before being used again to avoid the spread of bacteria you may have accumulated from spending time outside.

  3. Wash hands with soap and dry them thoroughly - washing your hands with soap and drying them before eating, preparing food, after using the toilet, doing outdoor activities, and more, will avoid the spread of bacteria and viruses.

  4. Trim nails - trimming one's nails is often neglected and thought of as unimportant. Nails also collect bacteria. That is why having one's nails trimmed at least once a week will prevent bacterial infection.

  5. Oral care (floss, brush teeth, clean tongue) - it is vital that one brushes his/her teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Having oral care will prevent one from having tooth decay and gum diseases. Gum disease can be passed on from one person to another by kissing.

  6. Covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze to help stop the spread of germs/bacteria - this will prevent the passing on of bacteria/virus or disease from one individual to another.

Conclusion
Good personal hygiene is a plays an important role in keeping us strong and healthy. These simple and seemingly useless things will help us maintain a good lifestyle and prevent us from getting infected by the many diseases that we could possibly acquire from others. Do not allow yourself or those around you to be infected just because you were not able to make proper hygiene part of your daily routine.
